Perinatal Excellence to Reduce Injury in Premature Birth (PERIPrem) has been shortlisted for the Pilot Project of the Year at the prestigious HSJ Patient Safety Award 2021.
PERIPrem is a perinatal care bundle to improve the outcomes for premature babies across the West and South West regions. The bundle consists of a number of interventions that will demonstrate a significant impact on brain injury and mortality rates amongst babies born prematurely.
The PERIPrem bundle is clinically owned and driven by perinatal staff across the region, working in partnership with the South West AHSN and West of England AHSN. The PERIPrem project provides a bundle of eleven evidence-based care interventions to support families in the South West.
“Our whole approach has been about agility and collaboration, each group has taken different things from the project across hospital team across the region each working closely with AHSNs and parent representatives.” ~ Sally Hedge, Programme Manager, South West Academic Health Science Network
The PERIPrem project is supporting the aim of the NHS Long Term Plan (LTP), which has made reducing neonatal mortality and serious brain injury a priority for the next decade. PERIPrem also aligns with the strategic aims of the South West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (ODN) and builds on the work the network has done in supporting the South West’s 12 regional units to improve outcomes for pre-term babies.
“The results of the pilot are impressive and really encouraging for those working with some of our most vulnerable babies and families. Understanding where this project has impact in this pilot is vital as we carry on optimising this work in the under Maternal & Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme.”
