Innovation hackathons

Our team use Innovation Hackathons to help identify innovative solutions to challenges in the health and care system.

We’ve all attended events and workshops that provided a great networking opportunity but were not necessarily useful for our work. The South West Academic Health Science Network’s (SW AHSN) Innovation Hackathons offer an alternative to conventional workshops. We take a ‘whole system’ approach, involving key stakeholders from all sectors (public sector, industry, charities and social enterprise) from the outset.

Our Innovation Hackathons typically consist of three phases:

  • Problem definition-involving all participants before the event.
  • The Hackathon-defining possible solutions.
  • The partnerships-to develop solutions after the event.

This is not about the usual suspects getting together to procrastinate. It is about using the Hackathon to develop cross-sector partnerships that turn ideas into solutions for the benefit of patients across the South West.
