Reflections on 2019 at the SW AHSN

Posted On 18 December 2019

It’s been a busy year for the South West Academic Health Science Network (SW AHSN)! Over the past 12 months we have brought curious and innovative minds together, nurtured extraordinary ideas, and shared strategies for change.

Top (L-R): TEDxExeter 2019, Spread Academy, Transform Ageing. Middle (L-R): SW AHSN office, PReCePT, QuIPPS. Bottom (L-R): Care homes collaborative, Institute for Social Prescribing, Space Awards 2019

We’ve spread a range of innovation that’s helped to brighten the futures of babies born prematurely, spot deteriorating patients, and detect a dangerous heart rhythm among our population.

We’ve transformed ideas into reality, including our immersive Spread Academy to train health and care leaders in unleashing change, and our new Institute for Social Prescribing, leading the way in a community approach to care. We’ve supported primary care teams across the South West with popular events, our evolving collaborative, and our new-look online community for sharing ideas, Models of Care. We’ve celebrated the success of the pioneering programme Transform Ageing and involved the voice of the public in health and care through our Quality Improvement Partner Panels (QuIPPs).

Close to home, we connected people at TEDxExeter 2019 and moved to a fantastic new office space in Exeter, which scooped an award and is enabling us to collaborate with colleagues and host interactive events, like our afternoon of thought-provoking speakers on transforming life in care homes for residents.

Our team has changed too; we redesigned the way the SW AHSN is structured, bid farewell to chief executive Professor Jonathon Gray and deputy Louise Witts who departed for pastures new, and welcomed new deputy chief executive, Dan Lyus, and chief operating officer, Kate Lock. The new year will bring more new changes to our team which we look forward to sharing with you.

You can read more about this year’s achievements here. In the meantime, may we take this opportunity to say thank you to all our members, colleagues and friends, many of whom we know will be working hard over Christmas, for your continued support for the SW AHSN and transforming lives through innovation in health and care. We look forward to working together in the new year.
