Optimising Care Pathways in Rheumatology

In May 2015, the South West Academic Health Science Network (SW AHSN) commissioned a review of rheumatology services provided by the five Trusts in Devon and Cornwall – Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust, Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, and Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.

The main aims of the review were to get a better understanding of the following:

  • Why biologic treatment expenditure continues to increase year on year.
  • The considerable variation in the use of biologic therapies across Devon and Cornwall.
  • The issues being faced by rheumatology services.
  • The opportunities for system and process improvement, spread of best practice, and innovation.

Findings from this work were fed back at an event in July 2016 with key players making a commitment to work together to improve patient care.
